The Generations

My musing on the last post made me decide to write down my chart of the encounters we've had and their generations.   I will miss a great deal of the stories here, it's not my intent to capture them all.

Come to think of it I think I did this before during a bad day.

Generation 1 - Discovering monsters, going mad, and following clues

Marble Hornets of course
Just Another Fool
etc

now, when The Tutorial and Seeking Truth hit, that started the shift into Gen 2.  M showed us we can live through his stalking, Zeke was the first ballsy sunuvabitch who wanted to fight back.  Both marks of inspiration

In Generation 2 - We can identify the monster easier, and understand what has happened to past victims.  Our curiosity is aroused, and we attempt to rationalize an irrational thing.

The three sages, and the spawn therein, my blog included.

A time full of titles, false starts, mindscrews and insanity.

So in this short review, we're pretty much current?  So what starts generation 3?  Will it start on the Solstice? or has it already started?  Maybe it started when I told everyone to knock off the fantasy life most of us were living, or maybe when Nessa was....well, you know.

All I can say is that there's a responsibility to tell your story, and tell it true,  keep it real, and don't be afraid to say you're scared.  We all are.

  1. Well, if Gen 2 was Core Theory etc, we should probably consider Redlight's posts etc as beginning the shift into Generation 3. I'd say we're either in Gen. 3 already (probably starting with you telling us all to snap out of it) or are shifting into it. As a group we seem to be moving away from running around like headless chickens and behaving in a more rational way. Also, proxies appear to have been becoming more involved, to the point of actually posting on the blogs.

Let's just not think about what you said would happen in Gen. 5. There is not enough brain bleach in the world.

  2. That's an excellent point, Vieve. Perhaps Redlight inadvertently started Gen 3.

  3. It makes sense to me, since the major shift in attitude and the departure from Core Theory started with Redlight's posts.

  4. I personally don't think there's any real defined "generations" of whatever this is, mostly because I don't think they fit the definition but also because there's no real need to. If I had to call them anything I'd say they'd be seasons, and not generations. In that case, I think we're still in the second season, or "generation" if you prefer.

P.S. Sorry I've been gone for a couple of days, I've been busy doing... nothing. Did I miss out on anything, like parties or fundraisers or something?

  5. JEFF IS NOW LOST.

NICE TO MAKE YOUR PERSONAL ACQUAINTANCE GREY.

    GENEVIEVE, JEAN, AND ZERO.
HE WANTED TO SEE YOU THREE AGAIN.

    AS IF HE COULD.

I WELCOME YOU TO THE BEGINNING OF THE END.

I WILL SEE YOU ON THE SOLSTICE.

  6. Um, is caps-lock supposed to be threatening me? Sorry mate, doesn't work like that. I am a little curious as to what you meant by that statement, though. Could you please elaborate?

  7. Oh.

So you're inviting me to a party and wishing to make my acquaintance in the future? I'm not much of a party guy really, I'm afraid I'll have to decline; but, you can make "personal acquaintance" with my teeth ripping out your throat if you're willing to come over.

That reminds me, I'm hungry, which also reminds me that I'm not supposed to feed the trolls. It's fun though, isn't it? I'm getting a snack and a couple of blades to keep at my bedside in case someone wants to stop by and chat. Clue: I'm not stabbing visitors to death with my late-night snack.

  8. ...I have to concur with Grey. The caps lock is...kinda narmy.

In other news, Jeff was my friend, LOST. If you ever get the urge to nation-hop, I would like to introduce you to a very good friend of mine, Mr. Cricket Bat. Just so you know~!

  9. I'd say we're in Gen. 3 since the focus of things has shifted again. The Titles are gone and now we're gearing up for a war on the Solstice. So I'd say the Solstice might even bring in Gen. 4

  10. I don't think 'seasons' is an appropriate term, sounds like we're part of a television sitcom.

Coming up next with "Fun time with Slendy"

*A man beats his head against a wall covered in symbols, until a sickening crack occurs, he falls to the ground lifeless*

    *Peppy upbeat segway*

  11. Zero I think I may have stumbled onto something big. It could change the whole way we've been think about, and reacting to Slender man. I need a little more information to be sure, but if my theory proves true we might have a way to beat him still. I'm trying hard not to get my hopes up, but I can't help smiling from ear to ear.

  12. Interesting; I was having identical thoughts just a few days ago. I was going to post it and everything, and claim all the credit for it, and feel so very proud of myself for having thought of it first. Oh well.
I would say that Generation 3 started with Robert passing on the Sage titles, not with the redlight posts. Generation 3 is defined by much greater awareness of what Slender Man is/does, higher crossover between blogs, and lots more proxies. All of those things started before the redlight posts; if anything, his posts caused the blogs to move closer back to the Generation 2 style.
Also, everyone else seems to be associating the earlier Core Theory posts with the Gen2 because of the existence of Core Theory in both, but I feel those two are very different. The early Core Theory posts fit with the knowledge/multiplayer/proxy style currently going on (though it was exaggerated greatly then), but if you look at White Elephants, very little of that is present. WE is what caused the transition, but I don't feel it was in the same category of blog generations.

  13. not the first time someone beat you to the punch, Omega. :D I'm sure you'll write up a much better article about it, I was just musing that day, since nothing has happened of late.

  14. Someone enlighten me. What is the "Core Theory" exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  15. In the most basic of terms: Every culture has a boogeyman. The creation of the internet led to a new one.

I'd love to link you to WE's old post about it, but of course, it's all deleted now.

One of my early posts helps analyze some of that, i'll look for it in a bit.
